Dartoids World

Howie Reed

Astute, often controversial, and always humorous, the Old Dart Coach, Howie Reed (a former rodeo cowboy and advertising executive), is heralded as the Dean of Darts Chroniclers - the most prolific and widely followed writer ever about our sport. He goes back decades with the legends and knows where the skeletons are buried (just ask any of the ADO and WDF old-timers!). Here are four well-known facts about the Old Dart Coach: 1) he is a Republican, 2) he loves the ladies, 3) he can drink most anybody under the table, and 4) he throws darts as bad as Dartoid.

Disappointed “Phil”istines

Years ago, before the Old Dart Coach was declared persona non grata by the self-appointed Grand Poobahs of darts, he included in his baggage for his winter solace visit to London a box of Dutch Master cigars. They were a gift for a fellow named Smitty who …

A glimpse of stocking” ain’t so “shocking” anymore

In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
But now, God knows,
Anything goes.

Well isn’t that just the truth. Just the other night – as a celebratory gesture – the Old Dart Coach ventured to …

“Amongst” the hopeful are many with “back class”

The Old Dart Coach was a big fan of Ricky Nelson who sang Traveling Man and Garden Party. If the ODC had a philosophy, which stretches credulity to the breaking point, he would borrow a few words from Garden Party.

Those …

“Jumping the Shark” and Touching the “Third Rail”

Regular readers of Dartiod’s World (for those who aren’t “regular” might I suggest a nice bran muffin each morning) may have been shocked when my colleague and editor published his latest effort. In show biz terms he “jumped the shark” by …

A July 4th THANK YOU to the Brits

Been around long enough to have memories? Been around long enough to have actually done something? Then you’ll wax nostalgic when a holiday approaches. That’s the case with the Old Dart Coach as America gets ready to celebrate Independence Day. Whoops …

Conventional Wisdom Ain’t Always Spot On

The term “conventional wisdom” is used way too often to explain a particular point of view. Just as often as it’s “spot on” it’s an oxymoron. The term is credited to John Kenneth Galbraith in his 1958 book “The Affluent Society.” In truth …

“We Wish You Love” steel tip – but baby it’s gonna take more than that!

The music world lost some giants recently. Gone are Queen Donna Summer, Etta James, and the Bee Gee’s Robin Gibb. As the Old Dart Coach’s mom use to say, “Everything happens in threes.”

The …
