Howie Reed

In remembrance of Howie Reed (October 3, 1938 – April 10, 2025). To reflect on his life and legacy, please see the obituary here Astute, often controversial, and always humorous, the Old Dart Coach, Howie Reed (a former rodeo cowboy and advertising executive), was heralded as the Dean of Darts Chroniclers - the most prolific and widely followed writer ever about our sport. He went back decades with the legends and knew where the skeletons were buried (just ask any of the ADO and WDF old-timers!). Here are four well-known facts about the Old Dart Coach: 1) he was a Republican, 2) he loved the ladies, 3) he could drink most anybody under the table, and 4) he threw darts as bad as Dartoid.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

Much was made in this space about the disgusting behavior of the drunken hooligans during Premier League in Glasgow. Echoing those sentiments the PDC issued the following: “We are investigating the events of Thursday (March 17), when a minority of the crowd …

Is “with” a preposition?

English teachers implore students to “never end a sentence with a preposition.” As the rule doesn’t apply to those who don’t know what a preposition is it’s a mystery why this rule is so important. One of the two people who regularly read this effort …

Is “experienced” just another word for OLD?

There is a constant debate whether sport imitates real life or visa versa. (As if sport isn’t real life.) As in life, one works hard at sport to develop abilities and then reap the benefits. In an 1889 essay Oscar Wilde held …

Butler! King! Baxter! Croft?

The Old Dart Coach’s past mention that many tournaments have faded into the sunset was true but failed to acknowledge those that are still going strong. One of those is the $15,000 Camilla Classic held annually in Nueva Helvetia, California. WTF is a Nueva Helvetia? …
