Column 407

The Diary of an Unhealthy Dart Throwing Slug. Week Five of Nine.

March 2, 2011

Today marks the half-way point in my quest to make it to nine weeks on Reverend Raw’s Whole Health Plan and whittle away a quarter of myself – 53 pounds – to reach my high school fighting weight, not that I’ve ever really fought anybody. I did try to wrestle a few dates in the back seat of my ’67 Camaro but they slapped me senseless, just like fifteen-time world champion Phil Taylor once did in Vegas, finishing 121 and leaving me with 366.

“I asked you to take it easy on me,” I said. His response, “I did.”

At the half-way point I’ve gained back three of the pounds I’d lost – I’ve lost nine pounds. That’s exactly how many darts it took me to close the deal with eight remaining last night at Union Jacks in Bethesda, Maryland…

…so I’m not just a bum when it comes to dieting.

March 4, 2011

One of the lessons in the Whole Health Plan that I like is the advice about cravings found in Chapter 4 (“Practice Staying Present”). The lesson is pretty simple: We have to recognize our cravings and “keep our poise and presence of mind” to get past them.

For example, when we pass a hunk of chocolate cake at the grocery bakery counter and lust for it we have to “recognize the craving” for what it is, appreciate that it is temporary (that it will “pass in about 90 seconds”) and “redirect the craving immediately” to some other behavior.

Something like this happened to me today while I was throwing darts. I wanted ten beers. Fortunately I remembered Chapter 4, recognized the craving, redirected my urge and had just four instead.

Later when I stopped by the store for some oranges a new craving grabbed me. Twinkies were begging me to buy them and take them home. So again, as a new student of good health, I recognized the evil, redirected the craving and settled for a large bag of Lays potato chips.

Probably this is why I have gained back almost a quarter of the weight I lost.

March 6, 2011

I am back on the wagon. I have shed all but one of the pounds I gained back.

After five weeks I have lost twelve pounds and, being a realist, have revised my nine-week goal to lose 25 pounds rather than 53.

I have also revised my plan to someday take a leg from Phil Taylor. My goal next time is to get my score down to 266.

From the Field,
