Thursday, March 302, 2023 The headline shouted\u00a0GATES GOLD! \u00a0\u201c<\/strong>The Soldier\u201d Leonard closed the gate on the UK\u2019s hopes of a Senior Challenge of Champions winner.<\/p>\n Yes, the Old Dart Coach knows that Gates wants to call himself \u201cSoulger\u201d (no such word exists).<\/p>\n Gates played really minor league baseball with\u00a0the Abilene Prairie Dogs, Massachusetts Mad Dogs, Catskill Cougars and Nashua Pride.<\/p>\n A\u00a0non-invited player,\u00a0Gates\u00a0made it into the main draw\u00a0via a Golden Ticket. \u00a0He trailed only a couple of times. \u00a0Gates had two 100+ averages in\u00a0the qualifier\u00a0including a whopping 108.91 against \u201cRocket\u201d Ronnie Baxter. \u00a0The final match produced checks of 13, 13, 13, 15 and 15 including\u00a0finishes\u00a0of 116 and 130 in a 5-nil win over Wales’ Mark Layton.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Over 3.5 million viewers tuned in for the main event.\u00a0\u00a0Most were shocked by the result of\u00a0the Gates vs. Phil Taylor match.\u00a0 The match produced more mood swings than your average run of the mill\u00a0\u201cDrama Queen\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Gates\u2019 10-8 win\u00a0included\u00a0\u00a06 double digits checks.\u00a0\u00a0At 1-nil it was Gates in 12 with a\u00a095 check. \u00a0At 3-2 Gates, Taylor burst forth with\u00a03\u00a0to lead 5-3.\u00a0\u00a0Gates drew level at 5\u00a0which Taylor helped by missing 3 at 32. Taylor regained the lead\u00a07-5 and then\u00a0Gates bounced to an 8-7 lead using\u00a0121 and 78 finishes.\u00a0 Taylor got 1 to\u00a0level at 8\u00a0but then\u00a0Gates closed\u00a0the\u00a0\u201cding dong\u201d battle with checks of 101 and 102.<\/p>\n Richie Howson upset Robert Thornton 10-6 reversing a loss to Thornton in the 2023 Seniors finals. Canadian David Cameron eliminated\u00a0Kevin Painter 10-5.\u00a0\u00a0Trailing 6-7, Martin Adams went on a 4-leg run to defeat Tina Gulliver 10-7.<\/p>\n After round 1, Mr. John Lowe, MBE posted,\u00a0Howson knocking Thornton out in good style, Cameron beats an out of sorts Painter, Lennard Gates beats Taylor and Adams wins in a tight game over Trina Gulliver. \u00a0The semi-finals and final – tough to pick out the winner, all quality players.\u00a0 The bookies make Gates the favorite, surprisingly Adams at 4\/1. \u00a0I think Cameron is the player to beat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Gates led 8-4\u00a0over Martin Adams when that\u00a0lead disappeared in a tsunami of darts.\u00a0\u00a0Adams\u2019\u00a05 leg run produced a 9-8 lead – the last leg, thanks to\u00a0Gates\u2019 failure to close from 40 with 6.\u00a0\u00a0Gates fired a run of 3\u00a0for 11-9. \u00a0Gates took 2 of 3\u00a0for the 13-10 win.<\/p>\n Canadian David Cameron broke a 10-all match with\u00a0Richie Howson taking out 150 for an 11-10 lead in\u00a0the race to 13.\u00a0\u00a0The roof collapsed on Cameron\u00a0when Howson took three in\u00a014, 14 and 11 (as Cameron sat at\u00a0\u00a0181, 143 and 229).<\/p>\n Gates\u00a0controlled the final leading 6-1 and\u00a09-5.\u00a0\u00a0Then Gates\u00a0moved to 11-5 with a pair of magnificent 11 darters.\u00a0\u00a0At 12-7,\u00a0the \u201cwhips and jingles\u201d attacked Gates as he missed 7 closing darts, losing 3 legs. \u00a0But the \u201cW&Js\u201d disappeared\u00a0as Gates opened\u00a0the decider T80 and a ton, allowing him to close from 71 with 7 for the title.<\/p>\n Well, Mr. Lowe, MBE was semi correct.<\/p>\n In all sports there are winners and losers and with the ODC it was always pure GOLD.\u00a0\u00a0Quotes on losers range from\u00a0\u201cShow me a loser and I\u2019ll show you a loser\u201d\u00a0<\/em>(baseball manager, the late Leo Durocher) to\u00a0Carl Sandburg\u2019s\u00a0\u201cGod, let me remember all good losers\u201d\u00a0<\/em>(which the ODC favors).<\/p>\n The ODC was a terribly loser\u00a0until one day when he lost to a \u201ca one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater\u201d. \u00a0His usual infant terrible act ensued. \u00a0It was stopped cold when a good friend said, \u201cWhy are you mad? You ain\u2019t that good.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Reality hurts.<\/p>\n All-time great\u00a0darts \u201cFugazi\u201d, Paul Nicholson, probably thought he struck gold\u00a0when he tweeted his all-time losers.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0main target? \u00a0Gary Anderson (of \u201cfartgate\u201d fame)\u00a0as he makes a comeback winning a his first PDC ranking title in eons.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0read a tweet from Paul Nicholson saying I\u2019m one of the world\u2019s worst losers. \u00a0Going to have a wee chat with him when I get him on the corner.\u201d<\/p>\n Gerwyn Price was golden last week as he\u00a0had his way twice with\u00a0Michael van Gerwen.\u00a0The first was a 6-1 Premier League win followed by a 6-4 triumph as Price annexed\u00a0the Interwetten European Darts Open 8-7 over Dirk van Duijvenbode. The pair were level at 6 in the race to 8.\u00a0 van Duijvenbode\u00a0moved to within one from victory in 13 darts. \u00a0As he is want to, van Duijvenbode\u00a0missed 3 from 36 for the win. \u00a0Price leveled at 7 in 18 with a 108 finish followed by a can\u00a0of \u201cWA\u201d – T, T80, T30, 91 and out in 2.<\/p>\n Current Standings\u00a0 3\/30\/23<\/p>\n This week\u2019s stop for the Premier League is\u00a0Berlin. \u00a0Last week, Peter Smith got his dance back as he faced Michael van Gerwen for the third straight week. \u00a0The two previous meetings? \u00a06-1 thrashings.\u00a0 The effort to change his luck this time included the use of a set of \u201cMichael van Gerwen\u201d signature darts. \u00a0van Gerwen led 5-4 when Smith leveled. \u00a0But\u00a0alas, poor Smith fell under the spell of the Newcastle Curse. \u00a0After gaining a Ton, his next trip yielded only 28 with a\u00a020, t1 and 5. \u00a0Against MvG, Smith had 8 -t1s, 7-1s,4-T5 and 4-5s.\u00a0\u00a023 scoring darts accumulated only 95 points.<\/p>\n Dimitri Van den Bergh<\/strong> will eliminate\u00a0fading\u00a0Michael Smith<\/p>\n Back on track\u00a0Chris Dobey<\/strong> will take out Nathan Aspinall<\/p>\n Jonny Clayton vs. Michael van Gerwen<\/strong> – will add to Jonny Clayton\u2019s woes.<\/p>\n The red hot Gerwyn Price<\/strong> will reverse his 6-5 loss to Peter Wright in week 6.<\/p>\n Semi<\/u><\/p>\n Chris Dobey<\/strong> will get revenge for his 6-3 loss to\u00a0Dimitri Van den Bergh in week 5 – reaching the\u00a0final\u00a0to meet Gerwyn Price<\/strong> who\u2019s going for his 4th<\/sup>\u00a0win. \u00a0He\u2019ll get it.<\/p>\n Pure Gold is Paula Murphy when it comes to WDF-ranked events in the USA.\u00a0\u00a0She\u2019s the undisputed Queen of the Oche. \u00a0Paula added to her points total with another WDF win last week\u00a0–\u00a0with a 5-3 win over Cali West. \u00a0Murphy is ranked #5 with the WDF on the road to the WDF World Championships (without last week\u2019s points).\u00a0\u00a0If the ODC has figured correctly, the win should vault Murphy to the 3rd spot passing both Rhian O\u2019Sullivan and Deta Headman.<\/p>\n Remember the
