{"id":6026,"date":"2023-02-07T12:05:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T12:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dartoidsworld.net\/2023\/02\/column-hr393-fools-rush-in\/"},"modified":"2024-02-14T22:18:02","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T22:18:02","slug":"column-hr393-fools-rush-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dartoidsworld.net\/2023\/02\/column-hr393-fools-rush-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Column #HR393  FOOLS RUSH IN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Tuesday, February 7, 2023<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Column HR393<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>FOOLS RUSH IN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It’s not a reference to the song from the \u201840s (sung by Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey Band)\u00a0but rather to the dodo birds that decry the naming of Chis Dobey (and others) to the Premier League.\u00a0\u00a0The world can run out of gas, and eggs (one explanation is that too many hens are now identifying as roosters)\u00a0but never stupid people willing to prove it by speaking out (the Old Dart Coach is exempt).<\/p>\n<p>PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter answered critics.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Many years there are maybe 8 or 9 or 10 players to consider.\u00a0\u00a0This year there were more.\u00a0 We sit down as a board, make a decision knowing we can\u2019t please everyone.\u00a0 We have to make sure that the player is ready.\u00a0 One player who wasn\u2019t ready was Michael Smith and his darts suffer.\u00a0 Those that were left out can prove us wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Smith made his PL debut in 2016.\u00a0 Under the format he was dropped after 11 weeks with a record of 1-7-3.\u00a0 This year, Smith\u00a0decried\u00a0the fact that last year\u2019s runner-up Joe Cullen was left\u00a0out.\u00a0\u00a0<em>I\u2019m gutted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Would he give up his spot?\u00a0 The wound wasn\u2019t that bad.<\/p>\n<p>Last Thursday night in Belfast Chris Dobey did the business, mentally giving the victory salute to his critics that questioned his credentials.\u00a0 Against Peter Wright, Dobey was nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs ‘ losing the opening leg in 17 darts,\u00a0missing two checks.\u00a0 Dobey broke back to win the second.\u00a0 They were with level (2-2), 15 and\u00a012.\u00a0\u00a0Dobey took 3 getting to 5\u00a0legs with a T21 check.\u00a0 Wright pause the enviable 12.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Dobey closed the match 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>Against Nathan Aspinall\u00a0Dobey\u2019s 3-1 lead disappeared in 14 and 15 Darts,\u00a0to level.\u00a0 Both held to\u00a04.\u00a0 Dobey achieved 5 legs and then with an ugly 18-darter broke to win\u00a0\u00a06-4.<\/p>\n<p>Michael van Gerwen took the first leg of the final in 13 darts.\u00a0 Dobey wanted T70 to break back and level.\u00a0 MvG\u2019s threes left him at T70.\u00a0 Dobey got the big fish with T20,T20 DB.\u00a0\u00a0Dobey carried on taking the next two in 15.\u00a0 MvG got the next pair\u00a0with\u00a015-darters including\u00a0a T14 check (t20, 18, d18).\u00a0 Dobey took 1 in 15 which MvG answered in 12 with a 92 finish.<\/p>\n<p>After 12 darts in the decider MvG wanted 127.\u00a0\u00a0Dobey with 160 and the throw:\u00a0t20, t20, d20 “thank you very much drive home safely”.\u00a0 This week the PL lands in Cardiff, Wales.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Smith vs Jonny Clayton<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Aspinall vs Peter Wright<\/p>\n<p>Gerwyn Price vs Chris Dobey<\/p>\n<p>Michael van Gerwen vs Dimitri Van den Bergh<\/p>\n<p>There\u00a0were those that predicted\u00a0the Senior Tour would fall flat on its backside.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0World Seniors Darts Championship returns to the\u00a0Circus Tavern this weekend (February 9-12) with a prize fund of \u00a3200,000 (title sponsor: JENNINGSbet).\u00a0 One big name missing is Mr. John Lowe who stepped aside to serve as Ambassador for the\u00a0Seniors Championships.\u00a0 This adds another title for Mr. Lowe.\u00a0 When addressing him one should say, “Ambassador Lowe MBE\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Norte America has three rooting interests in Canadians John Part\u00a0and David Cameron – USA standard is carried by Larry \u201cThe American Eagle\u201d Butler.\u00a0\u00a0Oh yes\u00a0 Leonard \u201cThe Jackass\u201d Gates is also in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be available by stream.\u00a0 DartConnect will also show the action – not the video – but you can watch the scoreboard as the matches are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, Phil Taylor is the 4\/1 choice to win it all.\u00a0 “Surprising” as last year he went out to Kevin Painter 3-0.\u00a0 \u00a0Maybe the increase in prize money from \u00a372,500 to \u00a3200,000 was an incentive to Taylor.\u00a0 Ya think?<\/p>\n<p>A good guess is that the first place money should be around \u00a350,000 to \u00a360,000. Defending Champion Robert Thornton\u2019s at 6\/1 with Martin Adams at 8\/1.\u00a0 Thorton defeated Adams 5-1 last year in the final.<\/p>\n<p>The Colonies’ betting choice is Leonard Gates, at 12\/1,\u00a0which is simply ridiculous, and\u00a0Larry Butler at 100\/1.\u00a0\u00a0The Maple favorite is David Cameron (12\/1) with John Part at\u00a080\/1.\u00a0 In the opening rounds the seeds are sensible with the exception of the #5 seed\u00a0Tina Gulliver – with betting odds of 500\/1.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome will depend on which player took this event seriously 12 months ago,\u00a0putting in the practice time and actual play to work on their game.<\/p>\n<p>One that took it very seriously was \u201cRocket\u201d Ronnie Baxter who is a USA favorite from the\u00a0time he spent here over the years.\u00a0 Once retired he has mounted a comeback with increased practice, exhibitions and actual play.\u00a0\u00a0Baxter\u2019s in a good half of the draw escaping defending champion Robert\u00a0Thorton until the quarter finals.\u00a0 Baxter faces Kevin Painter and with a win will face the winner of Gulliver vs. Harbour. It\u2019s there for the taking and at 100\/1 why not ?<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago, the ODC suggested that the ADO and the NDFC (National Darts Federation of Canada) work together for an annual match between the two nations.\u00a0\u00a0As is par for the course the idea was rejected. Now the CDC has taken a baby step in that direction, although is unwilling to take a major step without a \u201cMother, may I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On April 21-22 the CDC will present \u201cUSA vs. Canada\u201d kind of.\u00a0\u00a0Night one will feature a head-to-head, Canada vs. USA competition with the winners moving ahead.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when the country rivalry\u00a0ends and it\u2019s just your normal CDC event.\u00a0 Now, if they truly wanted to do something they’d make it a team event.\u00a0 Night 1: singles.\u00a0 Day or Night:\u00a0two\u00a0pairs, then reverse singles.\u00a0 One point for a singles win and two points for a pairs win.\u00a0 That\u2019s Canada vs. USA.<\/p>\n<p>People gathered\u00a0\u00a0at Gobbler’s Knob (PA) as Punxsutawney Phil’s made\u00a0his annual
