\nPDC Mid-summer Classic – July 16-24, but first…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. John Lowe, MBE has stepped away from competing on the Senior Tour.\u00a0\u00a0I have decided that I have contributed to introducing the senior\u2019s championships.\u00a0 I did not win any of my matches but felt I did play at a good and decent level for a senior, senior.\u00a0 I\u2019m\u00a0pleased to say the board of the WSDT have asked me to join them in a non-playing ambassadorial role.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The WSDT will be adding a new event next year with the prize fund increased to \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n

American\u2019s baseball has a Mid-summer Classic (the All-Star Game).\u00a0 The PDC has the World Matchplay, called the Mid-summer Classic by the Old Dart Coach. \u00a0The top 16 from the Order of Merit and the top 16 Pro Tour Order of Merit play.\u00a0 The Winter Gardens in Blackpool will\u00a0again welcome the darting elite.\u00a0 They\u2019ll all be chasing defending champion Peter Wright for a piece of the \u00a3800,000 available.\u00a0 Even first round losers pocket \u00a310,000 – not too Chablis.\u00a0 The winner collects \u00a3200,000, up from \u00a3150,000 last year.<\/p>\n

On finals day, July 24, the Women\u2019s Matchplay will be on stage in the afternoon chasing their World Matchplay title.\u00a0 The winner gets \u00a310,000, same as the men\u2019s first round loser.\u00a0 Yikes!<\/p>\n

As a flag waving Yank, it\u2019s obligatory for the ODC to mention that Larry Butler won the first PDC Matchplay 16-12 over Dennis Priestly.\u00a0 Butler took home \u00a310,000 from a \u00a340,000 prize fund.\u00a0 That was in 1994 when everything was cheaper.\u00a0 Dennis Priestly never won the Matchplay, finishing second two more times – in 1995 to Phil Taylor and in 1996 to Peter Everson.\u00a0 Taylor had 16 wins and a second in 24 appearances.\u00a0 Both MvG and Rod Harrington have two wins.<\/p>\n

Who\u00a0will win this year?\u00a0 The guess is that it will come from the bookmakers first 5 betting choices. \u00a0The line is\u00a011\/2 (or 5 \u00bd\u00a0to 1 American odds)\u00a0Michael van Gerwen with the defending champ Peter Wright at 15\/2.\u00a0 A pair of 8 and 9-1 shots, Jonny Clayton and Michael Smith, are also in play.\u00a0 Dimitri Van den Bergh (champion in 2020) and Luke Humphries are 12\/1.<\/p>\n

2\/5 James Wade<\/strong>\u00a0vs.\u00a019\/10<\/strong>\u00a0Martin Lukeman.\u00a0 Wade sometimes lets his mouth yap before his brain is in action.\u00a0 Misplaced ignorant remark at Wayne Mardle, \u201cI won more in two weeks than he did in his career.\u201d\u00a0 This because Wayne correctly depicts James as up and down more than Pee Wee Herman at the theater.\u00a0 Wade will win.<\/p>\n

1\/3 Michael van Gerwen<\/strong>\u00a0vs.\u00a023\/10<\/strong>\u00a0Adrian Lewis.\u00a0 Adrian \u201cBig Baby\u201d Lewis got his first ranking title in three years at Players Championship 20 last Sunday.\u00a0 The gloomy\u00a0Guses will say it was a field devoid of stars.\u00a0 Wrong, Bucko.\u00a0 Lewis beat Jonny Clayton (6-4) and Nathan Aspinall (7-2).\u00a0 He\u2019ll play well but lose to tourney favorite MvG, going for his third World Matchplay title.<\/p>\n

4\/7<\/strong>\u00a0Luke Humphries vs.\u00a011\/8<\/strong>\u00a0Nathan Aspinall<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cCool Hand Luke\u201d will have more than he can handle as the #2 on the Pro Tour advances for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n

4\/7 Rob Cross<\/strong>\u00a0vs.\u00a07\/5<\/strong>\u00a0Chris Dobey.\u00a0 Cross, the winner of the Matchplay in 2019, could pose a problem down the road. \u00a0Chris Dobey out of Matchplay 2019, 2021 and 2022.\u00a0 Adios Chris.<\/p>\n

4\/6 Jose de Sousa<\/strong>\u00a0vs.\u00a06\/5\u00a0<\/strong>Gabriel Clemens.\u00a0 de Sousa is called \u201cThe Special One\u201d. Clemens was touted high going in to the World Cup.\u00a0 Flopped.\u00a0 de Sousa may toss the wrong out on occasion, but he\u2019ll get enough right to move on.<\/p>\n

4\/11 Gerwyn Price<\/strong>\u00a0vs.\u00a021\/10<\/strong>\u00a0Martin Schindler.\u00a0 Price, when good is very good and when bad is very bad.\u00a0 He\u2019ll just need to be average against out-of-form Schindler who\u2019s taken a step backward.<\/p>\n

1\/2 Dave Chisnall<\/strong>\u00a0vs.\u00a08\/5<\/strong> Kim Huybrechts.\u00a0 Chisnall has made the quarters here 5 times although not since 2018.\u00a0 Huybrechts made the quarters in 2018.\u00a0 Not this time.\u00a0 Nice draw Chizzy.<\/p>\n

Mr. John Lowe will make a great ambassador for the Seniors.\u00a0 He has been an advocate for the sport for 50 years – an original member of the World Players Professional Darts Players Association (WPPDA) which eventually begat the PDC, thanks to the late Tommy Cox.\u00a0 When the WPPDA wanted compensation for arriving in Las Vegas early for the USA vs. England prior to the North American, Mr. Lowe stood firm with others refusing to play.\u00a0 The WPPDA was weakened earlier in the year when Eric Bristow and his manager (Dick Allix) broke away from the WPPDA after Eric and Steve Brennen had a falling out at the MFI Matchplay.<\/p>\n
